Initially, I concentrated mostly on non-fiction. I kept my attempts at fiction to myself. This changed when my six-year-old son asked when I was going to write a book for him. The result is Geheim uit de Gouden Eeuw (Dutch only, ISBN paperback 9 789402 128314 and Ebook 9 789402 126372), which was published in 2014. It is the story of an eleven-year-old boy who travels as a stowaway on a ship of the Dutch East India Company. He is on a mission, but sadly he discovers that his task is virtually impossible. Eventually, friendship and courage prove to be good ingredients for success. The book is aimed at girls and boys between the ages of 8 and 12. It shows them how many contemporary Dutch expressions come from our maritime history. All proceeds are donated to Unicef.

Writing a children’s novel was a totally new experience for me, but one I certainly enjoyed. I might actually decide to do it again.
